Canton Township Prepares for November 5th Election

As absentee ballots begin to hit mailboxes, voters in Canton Township are gearing up for a big decision on November 5th. The race for the township supervisor’s position features two candidates vying for the chance to lead this community: the current supervisor, Anne Marie Graham-Hudak, a Democrat, and her challenger, Pat Williams, a Republican who held the supervisor’s role from 2016 to 2020 before being unseated by Graham-Hudak.

Candidates on the Ballot

Let’s get to know the candidates a little better!

**Anne Marie Graham-Hudak** boasts a solid 30-year connection to Canton, having not only lived but also worked hard for the community. With a background in engineering (a BS from Boston University) and an MBA from Lawrence Technological University, she has an impressive resume. Before assuming the role of supervisor in 2020, she contributed as a trustee and planning commissioner, along with serving in various engineering roles at major companies like Ford and Chrysler. Currently, she holds multiple important positions, such as the chair of the 35th District Court Authority.

**Pat Williams**, on the other hand, emphasizes a return to “common-sense” governance. Like Graham-Hudak, he is a long-time resident of Canton, living here for over 40 years. With a background in the automotive industry for four decades, he is now a Realtor. Williams also has an extensive educational background with degrees in metallurgy, business, and an MBA. Charmingly, he mentions his children attended P-CCS, reflecting his deep roots and ongoing involvement in the community.

Campaign Issues and Priorities

Both candidates shared their visions during a recent questionnaire, highlighting their respective plans if elected.

Graham-Hudak states, “I am running for reelection to keep moving Canton forward.” She cites a record of bringing in $37.7 million in tax dollars aimed at infrastructure improvements, public safety initiatives, and enhancing community spaces since taking office. She emphasizes her achievements during challenging times, including navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic, tornadoes, and floods while ensuring the township stays on a positive trajectory.

In contrast, Williams believes that the current board has drifted from listening to the community’s voices. He acknowledges that community feedback indicates a need for more accessibility and responsiveness from township leadership. “I will end special interests being put ahead of community needs,” he assures voters, promising a government that truly serves the people of Canton.

Economic Development and Infrastructure

The candidates also touched on critical issues of economic development and infrastructure, both viewed as vital to the future of Canton. Graham-Hudak emphasizes robust partnerships that have resulted in significant investments, including a $9.5 million project for the Canton Town Square aimed at revitalizing the area and attracting further private investments.

Williams recalls his previous initiatives, stating, “Canton does today and has for many years done an excellent job in the area of economic development.” He recalls his team’s early conversations with big names like Amazon, alluding to the bright prospects ahead for Canton’s shopping and entertainment districts, especially near Michigan Avenue.

Focus on Community Wellbeing

When it comes to strengthening community values and listening to resident needs, both candidates hold varying perspectives. Graham-Hudak focuses on ongoing investments in public safety and green spaces, while also promoting educational initiatives for the youth in the community. Williams emphasizes the need to prioritize “core services at the best costs” and wishes to enhance community engagement at all levels.

As both candidates gear up for the final stretch of the campaign, it’s clear that they are passionate about their visions for the township’s future and are eager to win over the hearts—and votes—of Canton residents.

With election day right around the corner, the question remains: who do you think will take the win and lead Canton Township for the next four years?
