Local Teen Brings Music to the Streets of Brighton with Painted Piano

Our vibrant city has become a little more musical, thanks to the creativity and generosity of a local teenager. 17-year-old Sienna Dietze recently donated a piano for public use, which she charmingly adorned with vibrant paintings of Michigan’s flora and fauna.

Located under the pavilion next to the City Hall and the Imagination Station, the piano is open to anyone who wishes to create a melody. The goal? To bring together community members and encourage them to enjoy music.

“Music has always been my stress buster. What I hope is, everyone would just sit and play. And who knows, it might be a fun way to chill and enjoy life.”

Dietze didn’t always have an extra piano, though. She came up with this creative idea when her co-worker’s parents wished to give away their piano. Even though she already owned one, she envisioned the potential of a unique musical spot right here in Brighton.

With the help of her friends, Dietze transformed the standard piano into an artistic beauty that beautifully mirrors our city’s natural surroundings. “On one side, there are cattails and birds, while the other side features a majestic crane and a willow tree.” Dietze said. Other exquisitely painted details include a lilac bush, vines carrying pink flowers, and even a frog perched on a lily pad adorning the piano bench.

Her idea got the support of city officials. It was through the Brighton Arts and Culture Commission that the perfect spot for her painted piano was decided.

Dietze has been playing the piano pretty much all her life. But her passion for the arts doesn’t stop there. This fall she will be heading to university to major in theatre performance directing.

Next time you’re downtown, take a moment to embrace the fusion of art and music created by one of our own. Play a tune, take in the sights, and let the painted piano of Brighton add a note of joy to your day.
