If you’re a fan of clever dialogue and rich characters, then Birmingham is the place to be this December! The Birmingham Village Players are getting ready to tickle your funny bone with the uproarious comedy, “Present Laughter,” which opens on December 5 and runs only through December 15. This is a golden opportunity to enjoy some highbrow wit and lots of laughs, so mark your calendars!
Directed by the talented Nancy Arnfield, “Present Laughter” is known for its sophisticated humor. Unlike slapstick or broad comedy, this gem relies on subtle wordplay and clever situations to elicit belly laughs. “It’s very witty. It tends to be quite subtle, but also very funny,” Arnfield shares. She compares it to more physical comedies like “Noises Off,” noting how each play shines in its own unique way.
“Present Laughter,” penned by celebrated playwright Noël Coward, first dazzled audiences in 1942, during a tumultuous period due to World War II. The story revolves around Garry Essendine, a matinee idol navigating the chaos of life as he approaches a midlife crisis. It’s a delightful mix of romance, comedy, and a little bit of drama—a recipe for an entertaining evening!
In this production, Kerry Milliron takes the spotlight as the charming Garry Essendine. Milliron, who is stepping onto the Birmingham Village Players stage for the first time, brings a wealth of experience in both comedy and drama. He’s excited but acknowledges that the role comes with its challenges. “There are only 11 pages in this 100-page play that he is not in and speaking and moving,” Milliron notes, highlighting just how dynamic the character is throughout the show.
Director Arnfield had a tough job in choosing the cast, with over 40 eager auditionees vying for a role. The lucky actors were selected not just for their talent but also for their ability to capture the distinctive rhythm Coward is known for. “Noël Coward was very involved with music, and he writes his plays in a very distinctive rhythm,” Arnfield explains. This attention to detail ensures that the production will be both authentic and entertaining.
Don’t miss your chance to see this fantastic production! “Present Laughter” will be performed over two weekends from December 5 to December 15. Evening performances are on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. while Sunday shows kick off at 2 p.m.. Tickets are priced at $30 each (including fees), and you can grab yours by calling the box office at (248) 644-2075 or visiting the Birmingham Village Players website.
For those looking for a night out with friends or family, there’s also a great deal to consider: a Flex package priced at $250 gives you 10 tickets that can be used at any show. It’s a smart way to enjoy a season of laughter with those you care about!
