President Biden finds himself locked in a close race with former President Donald J. Trump, according to the latest polls. The two key states in question are Pennsylvania, which Mr. Biden narrowly won in the 2020 election, and Virginia, where Biden outperformed Trump by a 10 percentage point margin in the same year. The results point to potential difficulties for President Biden in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
The recently published poll results, gathered before the assassination attempt on Mr. Trump, showed Trump leading Biden by 48 percent to 45 percent among likely voters in Pennsylvania. Worryingly for Biden and Democrats, these figures are virtually unchanged from the numbers quoted in a similar poll conducted in May. Given its electoral significance, Pennsylvania would be a crucial win for Biden’s re-election bid.
Upsetting predictions from strategists of both parties, Virginia’s standing has defied expectations by appearing competitive in a potential Trump-Biden rematch. The polling data shows Biden maintaining a slight lead over Trump in Virginia, by a margin of 3 percentage points among likely voters. This difference, however, is within the margin of error, raising questions about Biden’s standing in a state he comfortably won in the 2020 election.
One independent voter from Richmond, Virginia – Kendall Wood, 31, a truck driver, sums up the sentiments felt by many. Having voted for Biden in 2020, Kendall now finds Trump more appealing. He says that Trump’s policies would empower him rather than hinder him, arguing that Biden fails to uphold traditional American values.
While Trump leads Biden by 48% to 45% in Pennsylvania, when pitted against Harris, Trump stands at 48%, with Harris trailing slightly at 47%. In Virginia, the story is slightly different. Against Trump, Biden holds a slim lead at 48% versus Trump’s 45%. However, Harris outperforms both, with a 49% lead against Trump’s 44%.
When questioned about the likelihood of Biden remaining as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, the poll reveals a tight split among registered Democrat voters in Pennsylvania with 48% in favor of Biden remaining and 46% suggesting he should step aside. There is a similar sentiment among independent voters with 68% suggesting Biden should not remain the nominee.
However, a solid 81% of Republican voters in Pennsylvania wish to retain Trump as their nominee. The sentiment is equally strong in Virginia with 80% opting for Trump to stay as the Republican nominee.
The latest poll results suggest a challenging road ahead for Biden, while Trump’s prospects appear to be on the upswing. However, with the margin of errors considered and the turbulent nature of politics, predictions about the 2024 Presidential election remain uncertain.
