Berkley Residents and Council Grapple with Decision to Ban Carnivals

Residents in Berkley are facing the possibility of saying goodbye to their beloved carnivals. Following a series of fights and safety issues at the annual Berkley Days, the city council is mulling over a ban on these events. This could mark the end of almost a century of tradition. If approved, it might bring a halt to all carnivals in the city, dramatically changing how residents celebrate Berkley Days.

In the past couple of years, the entertaining and joyous atmosphere at Berkley Days has been interrupted by chaos caused by some teenagers. The trouble has not only left families fleeing the event, but has also proven to be a strain on police resources. This is not an isolated issue as similar incidents have been reported in other festivals across metro Detroit.

Berkley Days has always been a gathering that welcomed all, including unaccompanied teenagers, but the recent events have left parents worried. In an attempt to manage the situation, the 2023 edition of the festival was commemorated with increased security measures. Unfortunately, this was not enough to prevent fights and disturbances amongst teenagers this year.

The city council is now considering a proposal to completely ban all carnivals. If the proposal goes through, it will effectively end Berkley Days as the residents have known it for almost 98 years. Unsurprisingly, the potential ban has stirred up emotions, with many community members expressing their disappointment.

While some parents are opposed to shutting down the event, there is a consensus that something needs to change to ensure the safety of the attendees. The city council is expected to discuss the proposal in an upcoming meeting.
