News Summary

Ann Arbor residents should prepare for significant traffic disruptions beginning January 13, 2025, as construction of a new six-story AC Hotels by Marriott commences downtown. South Fifth Avenue will see lane closures, and additional street work will occur throughout the city. Temporary closures on East University Avenue and Washtenaw Avenue further emphasize the extensive infrastructure changes ahead. With multiple projects affecting traffic, residents are encouraged to stay informed and plan accordingly.

Ann Arbor Set for Major Changes as Traffic Restrictions Loom

Hey there, Ann Arbor residents! Buckle up because starting January 13, 2025, our lovely downtown area is facing some significant traffic restrictions. If you’ve been out and about lately, you might have noticed some construction action, but get ready for an uptick as a new six-story AC Hotels by Marriott joins the neighborhood!

The Big Hotel Build

That’s right! The construction of the AC Hotels by Marriott is going to make an impression, but it comes with a price—one lane of South Fifth Avenue will be closed between East Huron Street and East Washington Street. This lane closure will last until October 2025, so expect some delays as we adapt to these changes.

Additional Changes to Watch For

In addition to the hotel construction, there are other changes that will affect our daily commutes. For example, East University Avenue will get a temporary makeover starting January 13, as it closes from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. between South University Avenue and Willard Street. This closure is necessary for crane placement during roof repairs, so your early morning drive might take a little longer than usual.

And hold on, because that’s not all! The eastbound lane on Washtenaw Avenue at Tuomy Road is closing from 9 a.m. on January 13 to 3 p.m. on January 14. Don’t be surprised if it feels like the whole town is under construction, because we’re just getting started!

Traffic Signals on the Fritz

Got your eyes on the road? You might want to pay extra attention at the corner of Barton Drive and Plymouth Road. Currently, the traffic signal is flashing an all-red light, turning it into an all-way stop. This might be a bit confusing, especially since repairs are expected to take several weeks. So, let’s watch out for each other.

Intersections and Lanes Closing Down

Don’t think your neighborhood is safe from the action! South Forest Avenue is currently closed between Hill and Willard streets until January 10, and a lane on U.S. 23 in Ann Arbor Township will close from Huron River Drive to Geddes Road starting January 13 and will last until February 24 for additional permit work.

In Northfield Township, the Joy Road bridge over U.S. 23 is now closed indefinitely due to a recent demolition. Talk about a headache! Meanwhile, Pittsfield Township is working on intersection improvements that won’t disrupt traffic until January 17.

What’s Happening Elsewhere?

Across town in Scio Township, the intersection of Staebler and Park roads will close through May 2025 for culvert installation and paving. Warren Road in Superior Township will be closed from Gotfredson to Napier roads from January 13 through January 17 for culvert replacement, while Frains Lake Road in Superior Township will close between Cherry Hill Road and M-153 during the same timeframe.

Don’t forget about Ypsilanti Township either! Tyler Road is closed indefinitely between McGregor and Airport roads for bridge approach repairs, and lane restrictions for water main work in the East Sugarbrook Community will last until May 2025.

Stay Informed!

Traffic changes can be a bit overwhelming, so make sure to keep an eye on official resources for an updated list of closures. You’ll find everything you need, including the weekly Washtenaw County Road Commission schedule and the MDOT road closure map. Stay safe out there, and let’s embrace these changes together as our city grows!
