‘Suit Up Sunday’ Dresses Up Young Detroit Men for Success

It was an inspiring scene in Detroit this past Sunday, as dozens of young men eagerly sifted through racks of suits, dress shirts, and accessories—all free of charge—at the event popularly known as ‘Suit Up Sunday’.

Whether a high school student requiring a suit for a formal school event, or a young professional prepping for his first job interview, one thing was clear: ‘Suit Up Sunday’ was there to lend a hand…or a suit in this case!

This community-centered initiative is a joint collaboration involving a local event productions group, a well-known men’s clothing store, and a local radio station. Their shared aim is to equip Detroit’s young men with the proper attire they need to make a great first impression.

‘Suit Up Sunday’ took place at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre which was transformed into a sea of stripes, black, navy, and polka dots. Expressing their commitment to the community, the organizers pulled together resources to make this possible.

More Than Just Suits

But the day was about more than just suits! The event also offered attendees an opportunity to register to vote. Event partners effectively provided financial literacy resources and guidelines. What’s more, a local men’s assistance organization similarly shared valuable information on Father-related wraparound services.

As one of the participants remarked, “A lot of times your first impression is a lasting impression. Sometimes believe it or not, it can all boil down to clothes.” It’s true that boosting your image can give you that much-needed confidence to ace interviews and feel better about yourself.

With the success of the event, here’s hoping that ‘Suit Up Sunday’ continues to provide these valuable resources and empower the young men of Detroit for years to come!
