Clawson Family Finds Hope and Joy This Holiday Season
In the cozy city of Clawson, it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas for Alyssa Depaolis and her two sons, Jordan, 13, and Cameron, 10. Last year, the holiday spirit was a bit dim for the family as they spent Christmas tucked away in a hotel room, tucked away in their own little world – ordering takeout and unwrapping Amazon gifts.
But this year? Oh, it’s a different story! After finding their way to Grace Centers of Hope about nine months ago, the holiday buzz is back and brighter than ever.
A Fresh Start
Alyssa, a vibrant 33-year-old, found herself navigating a life filled with uncertainty. Moving from one place to another, she eventually settled in North Carolina, juggling a midnight job while homeschooling her boys. But life can be a tough road to travel. The struggle to make ends meet became overwhelming, leading Alyssa to a realization that changed everything.
“I got burnt out on that,” she shared, reflecting on the endless cycle of living paycheck to paycheck. “I realized that we had to move back home to Michigan.” That call for help brought her to Grace Centers of Hope, where her journey to stability truly began.
A Safe Haven
Grace Centers of Hope has become more than just a roof over their heads – it’s a nurturing community that’s helped them blossom. “It’s been a phenomenal stay. There’s nothing that we have gone without,” Alyssa said with gratitude shining through her words. “My kids have rejoined the public school system, making new friends and thriving.”
Now living at 35 E. Huron St. in Pontiac, Alyssa also dives into community service, sharing her strength in the kids’ ministry at Grace Gospel Fellowship. “I have been really thankful to be part of it,” she shares, her smile reflecting the joy she feels.
Celebrating the Holidays Together
As Christmas approaches, Grace Centers of Hope ensures that residents enjoy all the festive cheer that the season has to offer. “They have events and celebrations that make us feel like we’re gaining memories and experiences,” Alyssa said, happiness bubbling in her voice.
This season promises a big Christmas dinner, fun events for kids and families, and even a visit from Santa himself! “It feels like a family here,” Alyssa explains. “Everyone knows my sons, and they’re so well-loved by the other residents.”
Her boys are filled with excitement about the upcoming celebrations and the friendships they’ve formed over the past year. “There are at least 20 kids that they have grown close to and are eager to spend the holidays with,” she beams.
A Journey of Change
Darin Weiss, CEO of Grace Centers for Hope, is proud to witness the progress of residents like Alyssa. “She is a joy to be around. It’s very encouraging to see someone who was struggling with homelessness getting back on her feet,” he remarked warmly.
In fact, the center aims not just to support residents during their stays, but to guide them toward long-term success. “About 90% of those who complete our program continue working and living independently,” Weiss noted, illuminating the hope that the program instills in families.
Looking Ahead
Alyssa is set to graduate from the one-year program in February and is thrilled about starting her new job as an operations specialist. “I am very grateful that Grace gave us this opportunity. My family, I don’t know where we would be without them,” she reflected, her heart filled with appreciation.
Join the Movement of Hope
Grace Centers of Hope doesn’t just help individuals; they believe in uplifting the entire community. Funded by the generosity of volunteers, donations, and thrift stores, they are always eager to extend a helping hand.
“If anybody wants to help, we’re always looking for support,” Weiss encourages. “Our doors are open to anyone in need, and we are excited to show the world that our programs work.”
With the holiday spirit making waves in Clawson, it’s a heartwarming reminder that hope, community, and love can transform lives – one family at a time.
