Novi Residents on Alert as Police Crack Down on Burglary Spree
NOVI — Residents of this peaceful community are breathing a little easier today, thanks to the fast-acting police department that recently apprehended an alleged member of a notorious transnational gang. On December 5, a homeowner’s alert security system and quick thinking led to the recovery of stolen items and a suspect behind bars.
How It All Went Down
At 7:19 p.m. on that fateful evening, the homeowner on Equestrian Trail received an unsettling alert on his mobile phone indicating that something was amiss. Upon checking his security cameras, he spotted individuals attempting to break into his home. Without wasting a moment, he dialed 911, prompting a swift response from local police already active in the area due to a recent surge in home invasions.
Within minutes, officers arrived and noticed a suspicious white van with out-of-state plates fleeing the scene. This marks a critical moment – what started as a simple disturbance alert spiraled into a police chase. The van eventually stopped, and four suspects jumped out, darting off in different directions. Thanks to the quick work of officers, one suspect was apprehended while the others remain at large.
Identification and Charges
The suspect in custody, 21-year-old Vania Herrera Valdes from Chile, initially provided a false identity. However, federal authorities quickly cleared up the matter. It turns out she had a criminal record back in another U.S. state. Valdes has been hit with serious charges, including second-degree home invasion—which could land her a lengthy 15-year sentence if convicted—and resisting police.
Currently, she sits in the Oakland County Jail with a $100,000 bond, waiting for her hearing on December 18. The other three suspects? They’re still on the loose, and residents are encouraged to remain vigilant.
A Call to the Community
The Novi Police Department is urging residents to report any suspicious activity. Chief Erick Zinser voiced his support for community cooperation, saying, “This is a great example of our police and citizens working together to combat these criminal elements.” He emphasized that staying alert plays a critical role in community safety.
Understanding the Threat: Transnational Gangs
If you’re wondering who these gang members are, you’re not alone. According to local law enforcement, transnational gangs, including the infamous South American Theft Groups, usually operate in small teams targeting affluent homes with high-value items. These gangs have a specific modus operandi: they prefer secluded houses that offer easy access and an avenue for a quick escape. Commander Jason Meier explained, “They come in from the back, do their deal, and get out unobserved.”
Recent intelligence suggests that there are about 100 of these gangs in the United States, with at least 600 individuals involved. By specifically targeting upscale neighborhoods, these groups can collect a lucrative haul, primarily in jewelry and electronics.
Advice for Residents
Sheriff Michael Bouchard has noted that despite their fleeting nature, the impact of these transnational gangs has been devastating. In light of these recent events, he advises residents to be proactive about their home security. “If you have an alarm system, keep it activated,” Bouchard said, reminding homeowners that many break-ins happen when alarms are off. “Make it as hard as possible for them,” he added.
For those considering a security upgrade, Bouchard suggests a mix of hardwired and wireless systems; the latter can be compromised by gang members using jamming devices. He even recounted a bizarre case in Rochester Hills, where a homeowner’s Wi-Fi cameras went offline right before a burglary.
Stay Vigilant, Stay Safe!
With the holiday season upon us and break-ins on the rise, homeowners are encouraged to rethink how and where they store valuables. Many criminals target master bedrooms and closets where people often keep their treasures.
As Novi continues to work diligently on fighting crime, residents are reminded that their eyes and ears can make all the difference. If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to contact the police immediately. The safety of the community is everyone’s responsibility—let’s work together to keep Novi safe!
