Excitement Brewed in Southfield: Annual Potters Market Returns!

Southfield is buzzing with anticipation as the 47th Annual Potters Market gears up for a spectacular showcase this December 5-8 at the Southfield Pavilion. With over 30,000 unique pieces of pottery crafted by more than 130 talented artists from across the nation, this event is the largest of its kind in the country! Can you imagine the vibrant atmosphere filled with creativity, laughter, and a shared love for pottery?

A Journey That Sparked a Passion

Among the artists is Inna Jacobs, who found her artistic calling quite unexpectedly. Eight years ago, she signed her kids up for a pottery class in hopes of sparking their interest. Little did she know, she would be the one captivated by the magic of clay! Her kids may have drifted away from the wheel, but Jacobs embraced her passion full throttle, transforming a space in her basement into a fully equipped pottery studio.

Working as a dental hygienist, Jacobs thrives on the therapeutic nature of making pottery, saying, “I find making pottery very relaxing, and the process helps me concentrate.” This year marks her second time at the Potters Market, and she’s excited to showcase her creations, which include mugs, vases, and trinket dishes. Plus, she makes beautiful menorahs, adding a lovely personal touch to her collection.

A Wide Variety of Talent

The Potters Market is not just a shopping spree; it’s a celebration of community and craftsmanship. With over 130 artists setting up shop, visitors can expect an eclectic mix from whimsical tiles to practical household items. Prices range from a modest $5 to several hundred dollars, making it accessible for everyone looking to find that perfect piece.

This year, 44 artists are brand new to the event, adding more diversity to the offerings. And here’s something heartwarming: a portion of the sales will benefit Leader Dogs for the Blind, combining art with a meaningful cause!

Artists Making Waves

David Goldstein, another seasoned artist at the market, will bring his creative flair from Brighton. Known for his unique utility plates and delightful birdhouses, Goldstein has been a familiar face at the market since before the pandemic. Last year, he sold around 170 pieces, showcasing his love for pottery by crafting fish plates and sculptures. “Creativity interests attract me to pottery,” he explained, emphasizing how pottery allows him to express his imaginative side.

Goldstein started his journey into pottery while teaching at Penn State University and hasn’t looked back since. He uses facilities at the Michigan Art Center to bring his designs to life, including pieces adorned with Jewish stars that resonate with his heritage.

Generational Connections

Also making waves at the market is Linda Lefkowitz, who finds joy in crafting pottery with her grandchildren. In just four short years, she has transformed her hobby into a community effort, showcasing her work at various venues including a Chanukah boutique. Living in Southfield, Lefkowitz cherishes the opportunities the Potters Market provides, not only for herself but for other talented artists she admires.

“It’s great to see how talented all these people are,” she said, reflecting on the supportive atmosphere of the event.

Mark Your Calendars!

The excitement doesn’t end with the incredible pottery. The Potters Market offers a sneak-peek evening for the eager beavers out there on December 5 from 6-9 PM, for a small fee of $10. This gives early birds the chance to snag the best items before they disappear. The doors will also open on subsequent days for everyone else from 10 AM to 8 PM on December 6, 10 AM to 7 PM on December 7, and finally wrapping up on December 8 from 10 AM to 5 PM.

So gather your family and friends and head over to the Southfield Pavilion at 26000 Evergreen. Whether you’re a pottery aficionado or just looking for a fun outing, this event promises to be an unforgettable exploration of creativity and community!
