Events set to commemorate 23rd Anniversary of 9/11 in Oakland County

Residents of Oakland County are gearing up for a series of events planned to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the tragic 9/11 attacks. Many events are open to the public, encouraging citizens to take part in reflection and remembrance.

The White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery is scheduled to host the 7th Annual Patriots Race on Sunday, Sept. 8. A moment of silence will be observed at 9:03 a.m. to honor those lost in the Tower 2 attack. Come Monday, a grand display of the American Flag will grace the Park grounds.

At the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, a formal ceremony will be held to honor first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty. With new names set to be unveiled on the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial, the event is a poignant reminder of their sacrifice.

The Day of Service and Remembrance is another commemorative event taking place at the Great Lakes National Cemetery. Volunteers will join hands to clean headstones, making #FlagsAcrosstheCountry trend on social media.

On the evening of Sept. 11, the Annual Farmington Patriots Day Ceremony will commence at Riley Park. Here, attendees will get a chance to pay their respects as ‘Officer of the Year’ honors will be presented.

A unique Battle of the Badges blood drive is set to happen at the Costick Activities Center. Held throughout the day, residents can either make an appointment or walk in to donate blood.

The City of Rochester Hills will also mark the day with a special remembrance ceremony. Scheduled from 9-11 a.m. at the Fire Department Headquarters, RSVPs have been invited.

At the Orion Veterans Memorial, locals can attend the Annual Patriots Day Ceremony, honoring firefighters, police officers, EMS, and military personnel. Honoring both those serving today and those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Finally, the Veterans Tribute of Oakland Township board is inviting everyone for an informal gathering in observance of Patriot’s Day on the evening of Sept. 11.

From races to blood drives, ceremonies, and more, Oakland County’s commemoration of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11 is laden with deep respect, admiration, and gratitude for all the brave hearts who lost their lives on that fateful day.
